💥 Ever wondered what those tripod-mounted devices are around the airport?

They’re called propane bird cannons, and they’re an important part of keeping our airport safe!

Each cannon consists of a 20-pound propane tank with a solar-powered, automated cannon mounted on top. Beginning at 7:00 a.m. and continuing until 9:00 p.m., the cannons randomly produce a loud “boom” several times each hour. Airport staff can also activate them remotely when needed.

Why all the noise? 🐦✈️

Birds can pose a serious hazard to aircraft during takeoff and landing. The unpredictable booms help discourage birds from nesting on or near the airfield, encouraging them to relocate to a quieter environment. By reducing bird activity, we’re helping create a safer environment for pilots, passengers, and wildlife alike.

The next time you hear a boom at the airport, you’ll know it’s all part of keeping our skies safe!

Noticed that you have spikes on it to stop birds from sitting on them.... when I was at KIND, I saw a bird sitting on one of the bird cannons and when it "clicked" before firing, the bird flew straight up and then landed back on the cannon after it fired.... those birds seem to figure things out 🙂
